Pagan Blog Project: Z is for Zaghareet

dancer

Zaghareet (pronounced “zah guh REET”.) also known as a ululation is a long, high-pitched, wavering yet sharp trilling howl created with the fast movement of the tongue to show heightened emotion.  On the most part its a celebrational  sound used to give praise and express joy within several contexts: ritual, singing, celebrations/events but it can be also be used as a sound of deep mourning depending on the culture using it.

In the context of bellydancing at haflas, weddings and other parties.  The dancer herself can use the zaghareet to show how much fun they are having otherwise it can be directed towards the dancer to show appreciation for their dancing.  It’s a great honour to receive a zaghareet.

This is what its supposed to sound like:

Pagan Blog Project: Y is Yes I’m Coming Out

images

When I was 21, I chose to share with my sister that I had joined a Wiccan coven.  My relatives were well aware of my magical and spiritual practices due to the familial connections but that was done with one’s own family and without outside participation.  I was worried with how they were going to handle the news of me practising witchcraft with a bunch of Australians who I wasn’t related to, so I thought I’d test the waters with my sister.

To say it was a complete shemozzle was an understatement…..

I spent most weekends at my sister’s place for years helping her out due to a horrid divorce as she had heavily relied on me as confidant, supporter and helper so I thought it would be a good time to share my news with her.  I felt she would be open if I was just honest with her in a clear, concise way.  I was informative and positive about it all, as I really wanted her to understand where I was coming from.  She spoke little and only mentioned to be careful and seemed to be accepting of my choice.

Consequently I was extremely annoyed and frustrated when I left her that afternoon and drove the 20 mins home, where my father was waiting for me in a heightened state of anxiety and apprehension.  My sister had called him as soon as I had left her place to tell him I had joined a cult and that I needed a good talking to as I was going to be brain washed and used.

I felt so betrayed.

I was genuinely surprised as truth of the matter is I had been so careful with the way I approached my sister about it all and was very selective with the language I used.  I even gave her a copy of Scott Cunningham’s “Witchcraft Today” to read and she showed some interest.  My sister knew how I privately studied the occult, how my interest was deepening as I got older, how I wanted to learn more and network with others who were likeminded – she knew these were the reasons why I had joined the coven  This is why I was so horrified at how she twisted my words in her mind and didn’t have the decency to speak to me about it further.  It pained me that my sister had backstabbed me this way and over time I noticed her pulling away from me.

Thing is I accepted my sister for all her insecurities, selfishness, ego, greed and bitchiness but I always protected her and defended her and thought that as a big sister she would also do the same to me – no matter what.  That wasn’t the case and what she ended up showing me was how much contempt and hate she had for our mother and the magickal tradition we are part of and how all magicians/witches are against God/Jesus.  I had NO idea she felt this way until I confronted her about her behaviour.  I knew she never practiced herself unless it was to remove a hex or evil eye (the same is with most of my family) but the absolute revulsion she had for practitioners of the craft really shocked me. Although we moved past it for a while she would always make passive aggressive digs about it.  In the end it wasn’t my coming out that destroyed our relationship but it was the beginning of me opening my eyes and taking in what a spiteful, bigoted and angry individual she was…she chose to severe the ties between us due to my personal choices of how to live my life years later and hand to god/dess my life hasn’t been dimmed without her – in fact its made me realise that I don’t NEED to have assholes in my life who put me down due to their issues with something that doesn’t affect them.

With that said, my father was more open.  He married a magician/witch after all and had witnessed my mother practice on occasion and was impressed and amused by her talent.  I was truly my mother’s daughter and as long as I was in a safe environment he supported me fully…plus he knew I wasn’t an idiot and could think for myself.  In fact my father met my fellow conveners and he opened up his home to them and many rituals as well as dinner gatherings were held there.  He got to know my fellow coven and got to see firsthand what lovely people they were.

In the end I realised that coming out even though you might think you are out is harsher and I get why so many people stay in the closet.

Would love to hear other people’s stories on what happened with them when they came out of the broom closed to family…

Pagan Blog Project: X is for Greek Wind Rose (free topic)

A Greek Wind Rose is a classical compass which was used in the Mediterranean by the Hellenics and Romans.  The Greek Wind Rose typically shows the points of orientation, directions and the names of the winds all which correlate.  The classical wind rose is the Greek Wind Rose as seen below:

Greek_12-wind_rose

The philosopher Aristotle in his Meteorology (c 340 BCE) created the 12 wind system which is seen below. 8 are principle winds: Aparctias (N), Caecias (NE), Apeliotes (E), Eurus (SE), Notos (S), Lips (SW), Zephyrus ( W ) and Argestes (NW) and two are half winds: Thrascias (NNW) and Meses (NNE).  Aristotle made an addition with the Phoenicias wind for the SSE but didn’t suggest any for the SSW.

Aristotle’s wind rose (correspondence to modern compass directions)

North (N) Aparctias (ἀπαρκτίας)
(variant Boreas (βoρέας))
the top meridian
North-Northeast (NNE) Meses (μέσης) the polar “rise”
Northeast (NE) Caecias (καικίας) the summer sunrise
East (E) Apeliotes (ἀπηλιώτης) the equinox sunrise
Southeast (SE) Eurus (εὖρος)
(variant Euronoti (εὐρόνοτοι))
the winter sunrise
South-Southeast (SSE) No wind
(except local Phoenicias (φοινικίας)
South (S) Notos (νότος) the bottom meridian.
South-Southwest (SSW) No wind
Southwest (SW) Lips (λίψ) the winter sunset

Pagan Blog Project: W is for Witches Flying Oil

Witches Flying Oil is an agent used to help witches reach the astral or trance states.  In the 1300 witches flying ointments were made with heated animal fats and nightshade herbs and it was claimed to help them fly to the Sabbath on their brooms.  Witches Flying Oil is a vegetable based oil infused with herbs which is a milder version of witches flying ointments.

Aside

An undine (also spelled ondine) is an elemental of water and the word itself is derived from the latin root “unda” which means wave.  Guardians of the west and ruled by the moon, the undine in the tarot is represented by the suit of cups. Like the ocean they come from, undines can be temperamental and have various emotional extremes from calm to ferocious.

I personally resonate with the water element even though I am predominately an air sign. I think this connection comes from my father’s influence as I spent lots of time near or in the ocean growing up.  My father was a deep sea diver, captained various vessels and was an avid fisherman who also served in the navy.  He taught me how to swim when I was 4 (by throwing me off a pier) and a few years later I reached the highest levels in my swim/dive class at school due to my fearless confidence.  Even after a close call with a shark (which could of taken my left hand) when I was 6 and nearly drowsing (due to a rip when I was deep sea swimming) when I was 16, nothing has put off my obsession with the ocean.  I have always felt like I was being taken care of and protected by the elementals of water and developed a fascination with mermaids and later on sirens.

800px-WATERHOUSE_-_Ulises_y_las_Sirenas_(National_Gallery_of_Victoria,_Melbourne,_1891._Óleo_sobre_lienzo,_100.6_x_202_cm)

(Odysseus and the Sirens by John William Waterhouse)

I have had a thing for Sirens ever since I first visited my maternal grandmother’s home island of Lemnos and learned about their mythology from the Ancient Greek point of view. There was more to their myth than trying to lure Odysseus and his crewmen with their song to their watery deaths by crashing their vessel against the rocky shoreline.  They were known to have beautiful voices which lured people (predominately male mariners) into the depths of the sea where they resided.  However some of the locals I spoke to during my last trip to Lemnos insist it wasnt the sirens voices but the words they used which was so poetically entrancing that it would seduce anyone anywhere.

(The Siren by John William Waterhouse)

In Lemnos at a place near my grandmothers home was a place called Kaviria (where the kavirian mysteries took place) and where according to local folklore legend, the Sirens reside. The siren is known as the handmaidens of Persephone and are part bird and part woman.  When Persephone was was taken by Hades, Demeter gave the sirens wings to search for her.  Demeter then cursed the sirens for not assisting when they witnessed Persephone’s abduction by Hades. Muse of the underworld, the siren was considered a very powerful creature whose image was used as a protective totem by the locals of Lemnos.  Where my grandmother’s house is located near the Kaviria in Lemnos (far east of the island) they have found many images of the siren buried under homes as a protection charm (see image below).

T is for Terrarium

A Terrarium is a miniature indoor garden contained within a clear container. And have been around since the mid 1800’s.

Tina’s Terrarium Technique (© T. Georgitsis 2014)

Ingredients

  • Any clear glass container: fish bowl, vase, jar (note: containers used with a glass cover need less watering)
  • Gravel or Pebbles (using coloured stones gives a great visual)
  • Sphagnum or Sheet Moss (omit if you can’t source)
  • Potting Mix (I prefer indoor potting mix)
  • Plants (I prefer cacti or succulents due to their hardy nature)

Method

  1. Ensure you thoroughly wash and dry the glass container (and cover if used) you will be using for your terrarium.
  2. Place a layer of the gravel/pebbles on the bottom of the container which is done to ensure adequate draining occurs when the plants are watered.
  3. Place a layer of sphagnum or sheet moss to stop potting mix from trickling through to the bottom of the glass container.
  4. Place a layer of potting mix which is damp on top of the moss.
  5. Arrange the plants within the potting mix in a visually pleasing manner.
  6. Arrange a thin layer of gravel/pebbles on the top to ensure the plants and potting mix is stable.
  7. Place any accessories you like such as rocks, shells, small statues as decorations on the top.
  8. Place terrarium in the home/office/business within indirect sunlight. Turning the terrarium every so often ensures the plants grow evenly. Prune periodically ensuring all the dead leaves are removed and the height and width of plants remain at optimum level so they don’t overcrowd the container.
  9. Water weekly. I suggest a spray bottle used over the plants to ensure they aren’t over watered.  If you are using a lid on your container ensure the plants are completely dry after you have watered them before replacing the lid. Fertilise with a small amount of water soluble fertiliser once a year (spring is the best).

Simple Use for Terrariums

Is a great home warming gift or can be placed in the office as a detoxing plant.

Pagan Blog Project: S is for Story

The Beginning and The End

She looked at her hands – flesh blistering and bleeding.  The raw pain she felt made her eyes sting, causing salty tears to streak down her face.  A muffled whimpering was echoing off the walls of her deep cell.  She soon realised it was coming from her.

“I will never confess.” She half whispered to herself, as she gathered the strength to steadily pick herself up.

She shuffled across the filthy floor, jingling the chains which bound her feet.  A foreboding feeling came over her, as she made her way to the barred window which overlooked the town square.  Shafts of light touch touched her vacuous face as she viewed the spectacle unfolding before her.  The townspeople gathered in the square.  Peddlers set up stalls selling sweet bread and ale, while others set up viewing stands in front of the pyre.

She raised her hand and gently touched her carelessly shaven head.  The raven hair was no more.  Her body repulsed at the thoughts of those men touching her.  She wore her pain like a mask, but those emerald eyes still remained her most alluring feature.  To this grand beauty they had put flames to the soles of her feet and palms of her hands.  On the rack they had stretched her like toffee and whipped her naked back until it bled.

“No mater ”, she whispered, “I know where I go.”

Her thoughts were interrupted with the loud creaking sound of the cell door being unbolted and opened by the guards.  In walked Father Toulouse carrying a well worn copy of the Malleus Maleficarum – the inquisitors bible – under one arm.  In the other he carried a small black leather bag, much like the Parisian doctors carry.

“Bring me a small table and a stool.” he snapped at one of the guards, while narrowing his eyes in the direction of the woman.

“Do you wish to confess now Verity?”

“Confess to what?” she answered.

“You are a member of the Vaudois, are you not?  You meet with other heathens and practice your rituals.  You cavort with Satan, do you not?  You perform your Sabbaths to honour him.  Do you confess!”

“What are you trying to say, Father?” she said teasingly.

“That you’re a witch!” he shouted, the last word echoing off the damp walls.

“Oh!  Such accusations!”

She began to laugh madly, her voice ringing out and scraping the cell.

“You sacrificed that child.  You took the life right out of it and gave it to the Devil!”

With a sudden burst of anger Verity leapt forward and stood stock still, two feet from him, her eyes piercing his like a needle.

“I was trying to help Emlen give birth.  Unfortunately the child was stillborn.  There was nothing I could do.  There was nothing anyone could have done.”

“Lies, all lies.  You can’t be trusted.  It is written in the Bible.  The Apostle John was heard to say that women were the downfall of man.”

“Believe that, let it comfort you.  John was a woman hater, the same as yourself.  You want to oppress me because you fear me.  You fear what I know.”

“How dare you speak such abominations to me!  You are Satan’s spawn, so help me God you will be driven into the pits of hell where you belong.”

“Satan doesn’t exist, you created him along with your idealistic God.  You think we are all born with original sin – how pathetic!”

“Curb your tongue witch.  You will be thrust down into the eternal fires of hell soon enough.  Many have witnessed your bewitching powers.  We have signed documentation stating you practice the Black Arts.  This alone can send you to your death, for heresy is against God’s law.

The cell door creaked open once again and the guard brought in the table and stool.

“Place them in the middle of the room.” ordered Father Toulouse.

Verity backed away and wrapped her arms around herself in a protective manner.  Father Toulouse proceeded to empty the contents of his bag onto the table.  He took out a box of matches, a yellow candle, a candle holder engraved with tiny dancing angels, a small brass bell and a Bible.  His trembling hands lit the candle and placed it in the candle holder.  He picked up the copy of the Malleus Maleficarum turned to a marked page and began to read out loud.

We exclude Verity Lore from the bosom of our Holy Mother the Church, and we judge her condemned to the eternal fires with Satan and his angels and all the reprobate, so long as she will not burst the fetters of the demon, do penance and satisfy the Church.

With that he closed the book, rang the bell once and extinguished the candle by thrusting it down onto the ground.

“Let God’s will be done.”

v v v

A short time after Father Toulouse had made his exit, some women from the village had come to her.  They had bathed her in wintry water scented with frankincense and dressed her in an unsullied white robe which reached down to her toes.

All the while Verity thought of her impeding fate.  She knew she was being prepared like wild pig for feasting.  Verity didn’t fear death –  that had never bothered her.  Leaving her kindred – that had never bothered her either, as she knew they would see each other again – if not in this life, in the next.  What bothered her was the exhibition she was being made into.  People had obviously come to see the burning of a witch – no matter if the accused was innocent or guilty.

It grieved her to think of her family watching as they set her alight.  Her body twisting and thrashing about with extreme agony.  Afterwards the chosen ones would gather her ashes and cast them to the four winds, not enabling her to have a final resting place.

“Here take this and carry it in front of you while you make your way towards the pyre.” said one of the women.

Verity let her thoughts return from the scene playing in her mind and looked at what the woman held before her.  It was a white, six pound candle.

“Is this supposed to invite death?” Verity said mockingly.

“You’re a marked woman now,” said the woman, as she gestured Verity to follow.

She was led out of her confining cell and up some squalid stairs until they reached the oak door.  This door connected the prison cells to the church anteroom.  Verity was then taken out of the dismal looking church and into the beaming light of day.  Many had gathered.  The town square was full of people pushing and elbowing each other to get a good view.

“Make your way to the pyre.” Another faceless woman said, as Verity was given a shove.

Verity swallowed her anguish.  With her hands outstretched bearing the candle she gradually made her way to the foot of the pyre.  The crowd oohed and ahhed as she passed.  A few actually called out to her, protesting she confess to her guilt.

Father Toulouse appeared out of the dense crowd and took a place by her side.  He nervously unrolled a piece of parchment he was holding and cleared his throat.

“Silence!” he yelled.

The crowd grew quiet in anticipation.  Father Toulouse took a quick glance at the crowd before focusing his attention to what was written before him.  He cleared his throat once more and announced:

I Father Michael Toulouse by the mercy of God of the Roman Catholic Church, seeing that you Verity Lore, of Arras in the province of Southern France, has been accused before us of such heresy as worshiping Satan and committing such crimes as taking another’s life, manipulating elemental force, shape shifting, the conjuring of spirits, sorcery with intent to harm and bewitching people to do your will.

Wishing to make sure the charges made against you are true and whether you walk in darkness or light, I proceeded to inform myself by diligently examining the witnesses and questioning you, and by proceeding in every way I was bound by the canonical decrees.

Wishing to conclude your trial in a manner beyond doubt, I have diligently examined each circumstance and the material provided in the present case and I find you Verity Lore have been legally convicted of having been infected with the sin of heresy for so long a time, that you have said and committed crimes against the Holy Church, and are therefore legitimately convicted of the said heresy.

The Church of God has waited for you to repent and acknowledge your guilt, and you have refused and still refuse, so the Church’s grace and mercy can go no further.  Therefore you must be an example to others and that they may be keep from all such heresies and that such crimes may not remain unpunished.

Hence, I Father Michael Toulouse on behalf of the Roman Catholic faith judge, declare and pronounce sentence that you Verity Lore standing her in our presence at the hour of midday on the 21st September 1688, in the town square of Arras are an impenitent heretic we deliver and abandon you to the sentence of death by fire to be carried out immediately.

A sudden wave of shouts arose from the crowd, declaring their consent.

Verity scanned the crowd for familiar faces.  None – all had abandoned her.

“I wish to speak!” she cried out.

“She wishes to confess,” one shouted.

“She wants to beg for forgiveness,” yelled another.

“Hear me out!  Let me speak!” she screamed over the crowd.

“Very well,” said Father Toulouse turning towards Verity.

“You may have a few moments, but chose your words carefully as they will be your last.”

“Silence everyone!” he yelled, “I will let her speak one last time before you.”

Verity thought silently for a moment.  She put the candle down on the cobbled stones and faced the crowd.  She raised her arms pleadingly and took a deep breath.

“I stand here before you all, a condemned woman.  Sentenced to die a hideous death – for what?  For the crime of serving you and your families.”

A loud mumbling escaped from the crowd.

“I cured you when you were struck down with ills.  I healed your broken bones and torn flesh.  I listened when you spoke of your sorrows and heartbreaks and I in turn offered advice to mend them.  I helped your mothers, wives and children birth comely babes.  This is how you repay me – with accusations and lies.  What has befallen you,  that you wish to see me destroyed when the only thing I ever gave you was my love? I weep for you now because you do not know what you have done.  The law of three will be upon you and I will not be able to deter what will come.  The end is the beginning and the beginning is the end.”

“Father”, she said turning her attention to Father Toulouse.

“I pity you and I hope you find the peace which you are searching for.  And to all of you, I bid farewell and may the gods have mercy on you.”

In the blink of an eye Verity ran up the pyre steps, grabbed the flint torch from the black hooded executioner and set the pyre alight.  She discarded the torch and thrust herself into the flames.  Screams erupted from the crowd as people ran in all directions pushing and shoving to get away.  Father Toulouse was so shaken he clasped his hands in prayer as he fell to the ground.

Meanwhile Verity twisted and convulsed as the flames enveloped her.  She let out a piercing cry…and then there was blackness.

In the distance a voice could be heard.

“Christine, Christine can you hear me?  Christine, when I count to three you will travel back to the present time.  You will open your eyes and find yourself in the safe and comfortable surroundings of my lounge room.  You will remember what you have seen but you will not bring back any pain from that time.

One, two, three.  Open your eyes now Christine.  Can you hear me?  Are you alright?”

“Um.…. yeah, I’m ok.  Just feel a little shaken.  Didn’t expect to see what I did.”

“I know, sometimes its hard going back, but that’s the only way you can figure out what baggage you’ve brought with you.”

“Well, I’ve seen it and I tell you what – I’m not going to forget it too soon!”

“You look like you need a cup of tea.  If you get something into you, it’ll help you get grounded.  Just relax and I’ll make you one.  I won’t be too long.”

“Sure, thanks.”

“The end is the beginning and the beginning is the end.” Christine half whispered to herself.

I would like to dedicate this story to the men, women and children whose innocent lives were taken during several inquisitions from 1231 – 1860.  During these centuries of injustice many innocent people were persecuted for acts they did not commit.  To our fallen brothers and sisters their memory lives on – for they live inside us.

R is for Red Brick Dust

Red Brick Dust aka Brick Dust, Red Dust, Reddening or Red Power is a powder which is used in African centric and folk magick traditions. The use of it originates from red ochre which was used by various ancestral traditions.  Red Brick Dust is used for protection (especially of one’s home or business), hex breaking as well as being used to colour bones or runes used in spirit, animal or ancestor veneration.

What is Crystal Programming?

All crystals take in the various energies they are surrounded by, but you can also tap into them and give them a job to do.  This is done via crystal programming. In its essence, crystal programming is a way you can charge your crystal with specific intent and purpose as well as it activating the true capabilities of the crystal which can in turn trigger them in you.  Crystals can absorb, hold and release information, visions and feelings and can be programmed for happiness, abundance, success, healing and whatever else you can think of which you want to manifest in your life. The way crystals are programmed is through projecting your thought form into the crystal in a clear and conscious way. The most effective type to use for crystal programming is clear quartz.

Tina’s Crystal Programming Technique (© T. Georgitsis 2014)

Ingredients

  • 1 clear quartz crystal
  • Salt water

Method

  1. Clean crystal of all previous programing (whether it was intentional or not) in salt water or by holding the crystal in the hand which isn’t dominant (ie left hand if you are right handed) and visualise a blue light flowing from your hand and enveloping the crystal (Reiki or Sekhem/Seichim is perfect for this).
  2. Formulate what you want your crystal to be programmed with ensuring it’s a positive though form for it to be of benefit as the crystal will only amplify what potential you store within it.
  3. Enter a place of calm meditative contemplation in a safe space where you wont be disturbed.
  4. Take the crystal and place it in the middle of your hand which isn’t the dominant one and place the other hand over it in a cupping motion touching the crystal with both hands.
  5. Place the intent in the crystal now by visualising what you want it to do ie if you want it to help it heal you, visualise the sickness vanishing away.
  6. Once you feel that your thoughts have successfully flowed through (you can usually feel this as a circuit running through your body and into the crystal) you have successfully programmed your crystal.
  7. Repeat the steps 4-6 several times to ensure your crystal has been programmed securely.

Simple Use for Programmed Crystals

Carry it around with you to trigger the properties you programmed it for by rubbing it or holding it between your palms for some extra energy and inspiration.
