Hymn to the Nile

 

Today is the last day of the Kemetic year as tomorrow we start the Epagomenal Days.

As I open and close my shrines on this last day and leave offerings of natron, incense, bread and water I am reminded of the Hymn to the Nile which I sing in praise and honour of the names:

Hymn to the Nile, c. 2100 BCE

Hail to thee, O Nile! Who manifests thyself over this land, and comes to give life to Egypt! Mysterious is thy issuing forth from the darkness, on this day whereon it is celebrated! Watering the orchards created by Re, to cause all the cattle to live, you give the earth to drink, inexhaustible one! Path that descends from the sky, loving the bread of Seb and the first-fruits of Nepera, You cause the workshops of Ptah to prosper!

Lord of the fish, during the inundation, no bird alights on the crops. You create the grain, you bring forth the barley, assuring perpetuity to the temples. If you cease your toil and your work, then all that exists is in anguish. If the gods suffer in heaven, then the faces of men waste away.

Then He torments the flocks of Egypt, and great and small are in agony. But all is changed for mankind when He comes; He is endowed with the qualities of Nun. If He shines, the earth is joyous, every stomach is full of rejoicing, every spine is happy, every jaw-bone crushes (its food).

He brings the offerings, as chief of provisioning; He is the creator of all good things, as master of energy, full of sweetness in his choice. If offerings are made it is thanks to Him. He brings forth the herbage for the flocks, and sees that each god receives his sacrifices. All that depends on Him is a precious incense. He spreads himself over Egypt, filling the granaries, renewing the marts, watching over the goods of the unhappy.

He is prosperous to the height of all desires, without fatiguing Himself therefor. He brings again his lordly bark; He is not sculptured in stone, in the statutes crowned with the uraeus serpent, He cannot be contemplated. No servitors has He, no bearers of offerings! He is not enticed by incantations! None knows the place where He dwells, none discovers his retreat by the power of a written spell.

No dwelling (is there) which may contain you! None penetrates within your heart! Your young men, your children applaud you and render unto you royal homage. Stable are your decrees for Egypt before your servants of the North! He stanches the water from all eyes and watches over the increase of his good things.

Where misery existed, joy manifests itself; all beasts rejoice. The children of Sobek, the sons of Neith, the cycle of the gods which dwells in him, are prosperous. No more reservoirs for watering the fields! He makes mankind valiant, enriching some, bestowing his love on others. None commands at the same time as himself. He creates the offerings without the aid of Neith, making mankind for himself with multiform care.

He shines when He issues forth from the darkness, to cause his flocks to prosper. It is his force that gives existence to all things; nothing remains hidden for him. Let men clothe themselves to fill his gardens. He watches over his works, producing the inundation during the night. The associate of Ptah . . . He causes all his servants to exist, all writings and divine words, and that which He needs in the North.

It is with the words that He penetrates into his dwelling; He issues forth at his pleasure through the magic spells. Your unkindness brings destruction to the fish; it is then that prayer is made for the (annual) water of the season; Southern Egypt is seen in the same state as the North. Each one is with his instruments of labor. None remains behind his companions. None clothes himself with garments, The children of the noble put aside their ornaments.

He night remains silent, but al1 is changed by the inundation; it is a healing-balm for all mankind. Establisher of justice! Mankind desires you, supplicating you to answer their prayers; You answer them by the inundation! Men offer the first-fruits of corn; all the gods adore you! The birds descend not on the soil. It is believed that with your hand of gold you make bricks of silver! But we are not nourished on lapis-lazuli; wheat alone gives vigor.

A festal song is raised for you on the harp, with the accompaniment of the hand. Your young men and your children acclaim you and prepare their (long) exercises. You are the august ornament of the earth, letting your bark advance before men, lifting up the heart of women in labor, and loving the multitude of the flocks.

When you shine in the royal city, the rich man is sated with good things, the poor man even disdains the lotus; all that is produced is of the choicest; all the plants exist for your children. If you have refused (to grant) nourishment, the dwelling is silent, devoid of all that is good, the country falls exhausted.

O inundation of the Nile, offerings are made unto you, men are immolated to you, great festivals are instituted for you. Birds are sacrificed to you, gazelles are taken for you in the mountain, pure flames are prepared for you. Sacrifice is metle to every god as it is made to the Nile. The Nile has made its retreats in Southern Egypt, its name is not known beyond the Tuau. The god manifests not his forms, He baffles all conception.

Men exalt him like the cycle of the gods, they dread him who creates the heat, even him who has made his son the universal master in order to give prosperity to Egypt. Come (and) prosper! Come (and) prosper! O Nile, come (and) prosper! O you who make men to live through his flocks and his flocks through his orchards! Come (and) prosper, come, O Nile, come (and) prosper!

What are the Epagomenal Days?

The Epagomenal Days are the five days at the end of the year due to the Ancient Egyptian calendar being divided into 30 days of 12 months.  Due to this falling short of the astronomical year the five extra days were created and assigned to the Gods.

What is Wep Ropet?

Wep Ronpet also known as the Kemetic New Year is marked by the rising of Sirius aka as Sopdet. This year it falls on the 5th August 2021.

The Kemetic New Year also known as Wep Ronpet happens this year on the 5th of August 2021.

Below is a list of things you can do, to honour this celebration:

Open the temple or create sacred space in usual manner.

At dawn, bring out all icons – the statues of your Gods, to be kissed by the rays of Ra (the sun) and cleanse with natron and anoint with oil. 

This is done to ensure icon is charged and purified.

Cut off an image of Apep’s head and throw it away or trample on it outside then dispose of the remains away from the home.

This is done because destroying the image parallel’s the “turning the dangers of the year” at which Sekhmet presides.

Mark on a red clay pot, something to symbolize all the things you want to be rid of, such as anxiety, hate, impatience etc – as long as it’s personal to you and not something that belongs to another, or another person themselves then smash the pot and/or burn it.

This is done to announce to Netjer that you rid yourself of negativity, bad habits etc before the turning of the New Year. 

Take an amulet which you have made or which you have put aside for the specific purposes of the upcoming year and charge it and purify it with natron on the shrine.

This is done as a protection mechanism and to symbolize the promise of good things to come in the New Year.

End the ritual with making special offerings to your Akhu (Ancestors).

The offerings to your Akhu is done to show respect and adoration to those whom came before you and in a sign of acknowledging and venerating your ancestors.

Close the temple and sacred space in usual manner.

The Establishment of the Celestial Cow aka Moomas

I like to use the time of the solstice in December to celebrate The Establishment of the Celestial Cow which modern Kemetics call Moomas because it occurs so close to Christmas.

Brief Explanation of The Establishment of the Celestial Cow

During the Amarna Period of Ancient Egypt The Book of the Heavenly Cow aka Book of the Cow of Heaven was created which details how Ra the Sun God was angry at humanity for their rebellion against him (by becoming corrupt and evil) so sent Hathor to serve divine retribution for this transgression. This divine retribution occurred through the Destruction of Mankind where Hathor becomes Ra’s emissary as the Eye of Ra (Sekhmet) and punishes humanity by eating up all evil ie slaughtering them. Unfortunately Ra realises Her wrath has become so consuming and overwhelming due killing every human who She comes across and She isn’t going to stop (which will end up completely annihilating humanity) therefore Ra realises he needs to stop it. Ra does this by placing beer which has been dyed red to give it the appearance of blood in her path. She drinks to fill, becoming so intoxicated falls into a deep sleep turning to her Hathor state when awoken. The survivors of the Destruction of Mankind end up suffering though a separation from Ra who elevates himself to reside in the sky on the back of Nut – the heavenly cow.

How I Celebrate Moomas

  1. I set up a Christmas style tree with stars as decorations and an images of a cow topping the tree.
  2. I send out Moomas cards to fellow Kemetics (I put out a call out on social media).
  3. I make offerings of incense, a flame (candle), beer, red meat and any other items such as jewellery, crystals, herbs etc on my Hathor/Sekhmet shrine.
  4. I read Hymns to Sekhmet and to Hathor (usually ones I have written in their names).
  5. I hold a Solstice Ritual to Hathor and Sekhmet.
  6. I donate to a charity whether it be through my time, effort or through donations (money or objects/items).
  7. I gift someone a present whom I feel will benefit from said gift emotionally/mentally (this personal changes yearly).
  8. I spend time in nature such as my garden, a park, the beach or the mountains.
  9. I pause to appreciate all I have, what I have survived and also achieved during the year.
  10. I bake a cake and/or cookies and make a gingerbread house to share with friends and/or coworkers.

Here is an invocation I wrote to Sekhmet many years ago and although my writing style has evolved since then, it doesn’t diminish the spirit it was written in and the power it has accumulated over the years it has been used:

This is just a glimpse of how I prefer to celebrate the Summer Solstice yearly which falls in December (Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere).

Book Review: Let Us Remember…A Devotional to Honor the Netjeru by Apryl R. Green-Muilenburg

 

LET US REMEMBER…A Devotional to Honor the Netjeru by Apryl R. Green-Muilenburg

This self-published book came out on the 21st January 2019 and is available through Amazon. As the book description states, Let Us Remember…A Devotional to Honor the Netjeru is a collection of hymns and prayers for use in ritual, invoking the *Netjeru as well as in devotional work to the Netjeru.

I originally discovered the author’s poetry through her Facebook posts and her blog (https://theferalgoddess.wordpress.com) where she writes evocative prose in honour of the Egyptian Gods as part of her regular devotion.  I was always eager to have these poems in one collection as I always found them so ethereally evocative and I am glad it’s come to pass.

Written by a modern practitioner and a devotional act within itself, this book is filled with beautiful prose and is a heartfelt offering. The poetry can be used in your spellwork, rituals and meditations to the Ancient Egyptian Gods or it can simply be used for the enjoyment of the prose.

Designed by Apryl herself, the front cover of the book shows an image of Isis, Queen of Magic and this depiction is perfect for the representation of the book, as it perfectly encapsulates the essence of this devotional.  Words are heka, and heka is magic in the Ancient Egyptian tradition and this book is a creation of magic in itself.

Apryl R. Green-Muilenburg’s qualifications in the tradition she writes about is impressive and solid.  Devotee and daughter of the Goddess Isis all her adult life, she is a Practicing Kemetic Witch, and Initiated Wiccan Priestess in the Isian Tradition, a Remetj in the House of Netjer and member of the Fellowship of Isis (FOI).

Apryl has been writing since she was a pre-teen, with previously published works in two anthologies honoring the Goddess Isis and Goddess Sekhmet respectively. She has a blog https://thescarlettedda.wordpress.com where she publishes her short stories written with a fairy tale twist based on personal life experiences as well as her feral prose at https://theferalgoddess.wordpress.com  She also has a Masters in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington and is an advocate for vulnerable populations, with a focus on our older adults. As Apryl has stated, she strives to bring a positive perspective to death and dying; emphasizing ancestor veneration/workings in her mundane and spiritual life.

 

With this in mind it makes this piece of work an artist’s vessel for illumination and connection to spirit.  When I received my copy of the book I was impressed by Apryl’s love of the gods which shone through the page like stars from the vaults of heaven.  So much so that I have taken to leaving it in my shrine so I can access it easily and use it when I am before both my ancestors and Gods in spiritual communion.

The quality of the book is exceptional and would make a perfect addition to any practitioner’s library, from anyone who is only briefly aware of the Ancient Egyptian Gods to those who are seasoned practitioners.

Working with Maat

 

Are you working with Maat?

How do you treat those around you or those you interact with and even yourself?

It is never too late to amend and update your practice.

Zep Tepi means you have a chance to try every time you are blessed with a new day,
in order for it to resonate with Maat.

Dont bring isfet into your life by going against Maat.

Be upstanding and ethical in your practice of daily life and
be the change you desire to see in the world.

Remember that words are Heka and so are actions and motivations.

Do things with proactive purpose, open awareness, compassion and kindness.

In the end, its up to you to decide how your heart will weigh up.

Fragrance of the Gods: Ancient Egyptian Incense

Incense in Ancient Egypt was seen as something containing the properties of life which could evoke belief and stabilise faith. It was thought by the ancients that incense brings about reverence as well as the manifestation of the Netjer it is being offered to.  The Ancient Egyptians even had a god of incense – Nefertum, the lion headed son of Sekhmet who in the creation myth was the lotus rising from the primordial waters.  Nefertum’s connection to scent and healing makes him the perfect patron of incense, especially since his symbol – the lotus, dawns every morning like incense smoke wafting towards the rays of the sun.

Incense has been a highly valued and used in Egypt all through its history.  This was made evident by its worth and the lengths the Ancient Egyptians would go to, to source it. Incense had a major role in the magickal and spiritual practices of Kemet and many expeditions were sent down to the Land of Punt (modern day Ethiopia or Sudan but scholars are yet to determine its exact location) to source rare and expensive resins used in incense blends.  Many pharaohs, noblemen and priests of Ancient Egypt would cultivate and propagate trees to keep up with the demand needed by the temples, tombs and residences of the time.

Various ceremonies in antiquity revolved around fumigation practices and in Ancient Egypt this has been evident in many reliefs and papyri describing these in detail, which has highlighted what a vital function it played.  The most common type of fumigation using incense in Ancient Egypt was used in a devotional act before representations of Netjer as well as for the Akhu at ancestor shrines or tombs.

The ancients believed that Netjer embodied the smoke of burning incense, as a romantic manifestation in the omissions of the lit incense they were offered by the priests and populace alike.  Like “God” the smoke from incense can permeate all, at times even without being visibly detected.  Priests therefore would offer incense as one of the ways to animate and reinvigorate Nejter’s manifest representation on earth, in the form of a ritual called “Opening of the Mouth”.  A way the priests could do this was by blowing through the censor containing the lit incense which activated the Heka through the breath whilst directing it.  Using incense to fumigate not only cleaned the temple and its possessions but it bestowed Heka through to the priests themselves as the scent activates communion with Netjer through an altered state which is induced.

It’s surprising to know that many recipes and processes for making incense was shrouded in secrecy but it was very well known that they contained specific instructions on how to create them with specific allocated time, ingredients with symbolic connections and Heka.  The priests who were responsible for creating incense for their Netjer’s did so with complete respect and devotion as if they were tending to the physical manifestation of the gods themselves – which they were in part, since making incense was seen as creating the body of the Gods.  Frankincense and myrrh resin gathered was referred to as “sweat” or “tears” of the Nejters and as such the Ancient Egyptians treated their frankincense and myrrh as emblems of their Gods bodies. The trees themselves were seen as fruitful goddesses who’s resin was divine menstrual blood.  So as you can see this emphasizes what great importance incense was to the daily rites of the Ancient Egyptians from their homes, workplaces, palaces and temples.

Today Egypt’s love of incense survives through the perfumery industry, the fragrant filled swinging censer of Coptic orthodox priests as well as the burning braziers found in the common people’s home shrines.   Many practicing Kemetics like myself make their own incense blends and one which is used as a staple go to for all Netjers and Heka is a compounded incense called Kyphi. Here is a recipe I’d like to share with you which you can easily make yourself:


 Ingredients:

3/4 (of a part) Honey

3 (parts) Raisins

1/4 (of a part) Copal

1/4 (of a part) Myrrh

1/4 (of a part) Orris Root Powder

1 (part) Sandalwood

1/4 (of a part) Storax

1/2 (of a part) Frankincense

1/2 (of a part) Cinnamon Powder

1/2 (of a part) Finely Ground Benzoin

Wine (enough to moisten entire mixture)

 

Method:

  1. Thoroughly grind all ingredients separately, and then mix together all the ingredients except for the benzoin.
  1. Add the wine to moisten, then form the mixture into small marble sized balls and roll them in the benzoin.
  1. Place and cure (dry) on baking paper until firm (a moon phase is the best time frame from experience.)
