Black Moon

a-total-solar-eclipse-1113799_1280

A Black Moon occurs when there are two New Moons in a month.

In the Northern Hemisphere there is a Black Moon on the 30th of September 2016.

In the Southern Hemisphere there is a Black Moon on the 31st of October 2016 which also happens to fall on Beltane.

This kind of event happens every few years and the type of magick performed is New Moon magick which is more potent during this time.

Focus on renewals, beginnings, manifestation of desires and foundation of intent for future endeavors, which first must come through letting go and clearing/cleansing during the Dark Moon, 2-3 days prior to the New Moon.

These are the following steps I would suggest you do when working with the Black Moon coming up:

  1. Remove – obstacles, both mental and physical which have been hindering you.
  2. Cleanse – energy by completely neutralising/clearing your space and yourself.
  3. Project – intentions of what you want to bring into your life.
  4. Create – possibilities for manifestation of desire which can be done through ritualised action such as a spell, meditation etc.

Tools: Making My Own

I have always preferred to make my own tools and items which I use in my daily magickal practice for several reasons.  First its not always easy to find what I am looking for to suit my specifications and secondly at times these items can be expensive.  I also feel its much more personally powerful when you spent time and energy making it yourself.

These days its much more easier to make your own tools of the trade (so to speak) using YouTube or on-line forums to guide you.  When I started, you could either do your research through books or through someone who was offering training through workshops or the like.

Luckily I have had the good fortune of being taught some of the basics through family or I have self taught through other means like observation or trial and error.  I have also attended various courses and workshops over the years (some being very useful whilst others were not).

I encourage all who walk the magickal path to try their hand at making their own tools and to keep trying if it doesnt work out the first time or two.  The benefits not only enrich your practice but also your skills.

Below are some examples of what I made which were a little bit challenging but worth the effort.  These were made in a day and for me it was a little tricky as the dream catcher would of been more intricate but the tiny knots were hard to do with my long fingernails.  It turned out OK nevertheless as it has special meaning for me because I made it and personalised it to my wants and needs.  The dream-catcher is made from suede, wooden beads and the feathers are crimson rosella, duck and raven.

The wand I made which embodies all the elements is made from copper, leather, suede, beads, crimson rosella feathers, shells, tektite and a lamurian/atlantean quartz.

Haitian Vodou Ritual to Papa Legba and Ancestors

Taken from my now defunct LJ.

I wanted to repost here to ensure I kept a copy for my own records and future reference.

This was the first Fet I ever attended in 2011/12.

legba2-mine

Mambo P was in Melbourne and held an invite only workshop/ritual  which I attended due to being on S’s FB group where it was advertised.

The ritual started an hour late due to us waiting for stragglers (H who is notoriously late was picking up a voodoo initiate from NZ who has recently moved to Melbourne) and it was held at Ceres which I finally got to see after hearing about it for so long.

Since I got there on time, I helped Mambo P set up and I also purchased her two books and cd for my own studies/information which she signed for me.

After everyone finally arrived Mambo P briefly spoke about what we were going to do and how Haitian Vodou works from her training, experience and perspective and then we got started.

We learned a song for Papa Legba, the Keeper of the Cross-Roads and two chants for our Ancestors as well as the Rada salute to greet our Ancestors and greet our Peristyle.

A pe was created for everyone’s Ancestors and Papa Legba beforehand and each person put something from their Ancestor upon it as well as offerings to Papa Legba.  For my ancestors I had my father’s pipe and a picture of my mother and for Papa Legba I offered rum (which was consumed during the rite) and pasta and canned food was offered for the homeless.

We ended our Service with a farewell and goodbye to the Spirits.

I did become tipsy during several occasions in the ritual (and I only had two small shots of rum earlier in the evening) and I feel I would of been tipsy moreso or even attained possession if I hadn’t been so self conscious of the fact my partner was having an awkward time of it.

Unfortunately my partner didn’t have a good time due to H being there (he was throwing death stares towards us throughout the workshop, most probably because he doesn’t like us due to calling him out on his lack of duty of care 10 years ago when he was running a yearly specific weekend workshop and he still hasn’t got over it).  Predominately it was due to my partner’s own words that the Mambo was being rather blunt and tactless when it came to instructing those of us who had never attended a vodou group ritual before and he felt that he was constantly being picked on and embarrassed and therefore couldn’t let go and connect (she did the same thing to a few of us as, myself included and the vodou initiate who was there mentioned to us that Mambo P was prone to behave like this in ritual and not to take it personally). My partner was upset that he wasn’t warned beforehand since we had already paid for the gathering and being a teacher himself he found a lot of her teaching style lacking due to its scattered and abrupt/calling out nature.

I have to say for me it was a double edged sword and has been very hard for me to talk about this publicly so have only confided in a few people in a safe and private environment.  Personally I did get something out of it and at first I was glad I went.  Its true what Mambo T Chita Tann told me about learning by participating in ritual – it does enrich your practice and the only way to learn other than learning the basics from her book.  I learned things which I had only read about before and I was shown how to sing and/or execute properly.  I have to add however that I did completely agree what my partner said about the style of teaching so I wont be attending any of Mambo P’s events in the future.  I found that afterwards I was dissecting what happened (her behavior towards other attendees and myself) and I found she was rather rude and tactless towards myself and others and not the style of teaching I align with.  Yet her contacts and friends who attended didn’t receive the same brash treatment and actually had more preferential treatment.  At the end of the Fet, Mambo P asked if we had any questions and when I did ask one, I was quite aggressively dismissed that H picked up on it and came over to diffuse the situation and comfort me. This was when I had enough and decided to leave with my partner instead of staying on for the social aspect.  Unfortunately I have come to find out many contacts and long time friends both here and OS have had quite terrible experiences with Mambo P and it confirmed for me that her manner of treating people is something I’d rather avoid in the future.  I don’t know why this is VERY common here in Australia  but many teachers and facilitators tend to have that priestessitis vibe and come from a place of ego.

Pagan Blog Project: Z is for Zaghareet

dancer

Zaghareet (pronounced “zah guh REET”.) also known as a ululation is a long, high-pitched, wavering yet sharp trilling howl created with the fast movement of the tongue to show heightened emotion.  On the most part its a celebrational  sound used to give praise and express joy within several contexts: ritual, singing, celebrations/events but it can be also be used as a sound of deep mourning depending on the culture using it.

In the context of bellydancing at haflas, weddings and other parties.  The dancer herself can use the zaghareet to show how much fun they are having otherwise it can be directed towards the dancer to show appreciation for their dancing.  It’s a great honour to receive a zaghareet.

This is what its supposed to sound like:

The use of it originates from red ochre which was used by various ancestral traditions.  Red Brick Dust is used for protection (especially of one’s home or business), hex breaking as well as being used to colour bones or runes used in spirit, animal or ancestor veneration.

What is a Limpia?

A limpia is a spiritual cleansing utilising an egg which is employed in some healing traditions such as those found within the gypsy and shaman paths.

Tina’s Simple Limpia Healing (© T. Georgitsis 2014)

Ingredients

1.            1 fresh chicken egg
2.            Holy water

Method

1.            Submerge the egg in holy water.

2.            Make a sign of an equal armed cross on the top center of the person’s head with                   the egg and repeat this sign whilst moving down the body and covering all these                   areas: neck, chest, back, hands and feet whilst reciting a prayer (a prayer written                 to a healing deity would be ideal).

3.            Take the egg and rub it over the patient’s body from top to bottom in sweeping                     motions whilst continuing to recite the prayer you have chosen. You may choose                 to hover the egg over the person’s body and instead glide over their aura, if you                     don’t want to physically touch them with the egg.

4.            Once finished, crack the egg into a glass if you want to read it (that is another                         practice you can employ as part of the limpia healing which I will go into detail                     other time) or crack the egg and throw it into the toilet and flush it away.

Simple Use for Limpia

The above simple limpia healing would be used for any healing especially when its thought the person has been inflicted with the evil eye.

Pagan Blog Project: J is for Jar Spells

sweet-as-honey-344721-m

What is a Jar Spell?

A jar spell is a spell which is contained in a jar and sealed to influence someone or something.  These kinds of spells are predominately created with the intention of swaying the person’s affections towards you in a positive way.  In most of these spells a sweetening agent is added such as honey or sugar along with a representation of the person or situation, herbs, crystals, stones, oils, waters, (pretty much anything you can use in spellcraft) along with a worded or illustrated petition of desire.  The jar is then sealed with wax to keep it secure and put in an appropriate place where it wont be disturbed.

Tina’s Jar Spell (© T. Georgitsis 2014)

Ingredients

1.            1 Jar
2.            Honey, maple or corn syrup, molasses (one of the items)
3.            Wax (sealing or candle)
4.            Red Pen & White Paper
5.            Nail or hair clippings from both parties
(this isn’t absolutely necessary but enables the spell to work much faster)
5.            Herbs, Roots, Crystals, Stones, Resins etc
(items which are synchronistic to the type of spell you are performing)

Method

1.            Ensure jar has been washed and cleaned.

2.            On a piece of paper write the name of the person you want to influence x 3.

3.            Next write your name on top of the other person’s name going in the opposite                       direction x 3 (ie vertically across the horizontally written name of the person you                 want to influence).

4.            Finish off by writing out what your desire is in a circle around both names,                             therefore enclosing them.

5.            Place nail and hair clippings from both parties in the middle of the paper and fold                 it so the clippings are contained securely within it. Whilst you are folding it up to                 the smallest size you physically can, visualize what kind of feelings you want to                     promote within the other person, to have towards you.

6.            Place the folded paper package at the bottom of the jar.

7.            Place any relevant herb, crystal, resin etc whose energetic vibrations you want to                 infuse into the spell.

8.            Using honey, maple syrup, corn syrup or molasses, fill it to the shoulder of the                      jar.  This ends up completely submerging the folded up paper and any herbs,                        crystals, resins etc  you  have placed in the jar and whilst doing this say                                    “as this fills up with sweetness, so do you become sweet towards me”.

9.            Close the jar and seal it around the edges of the lid with candle or sealing wax                         visualising your petition manifesting in reality.

10.          Place jar in an area where it wont be disturbed ie back of a kitchen cupboard.

Simple Use for Jar Spells

Above is a simple jar spell to get a person to favour you and look upon you in a positive and warm way.   This can be used for anyone who is cranky, unresponsive, unsupportive, controlling, manipulating and making your life miserable such as a family, friends, co-workers, tradespersons, inlaws, judges, lawyers etc.
